Charminster

Literally "The Minster on the Cerne": in the old Dorset dialect "c" was pronounced "ch", and the "e" became an "a".

The Cerne is a fast flowing chalk stream that flows from Cerne Abbas to join the River Frome just south of Charminster. Well before Roman times Charminster developed as a village on the first crossing point over the river.

Today you can see evidence of the past through ancient houses, the beautiful 12th Century St Mary’s Church (replacing an even older church on the same site) and humpbacked Alley Bridge where the ford probably was once found.

Traces of stone age, bronze age, iron age and Roman settlements can easily be found in the area, as well as many relics. Wolfeton House, the village’s grand house, has had links with royalty going back to Tudor times, is often open to the public.

Local information

  • The village has one shop/newsagent/post office and three pubs. They are well worth trying out and meeting the locals (they are friendly). The "Inn for Four Seasons" is just a few yards down the road, and its food can be excellent value.
  • Slades Farm is in the village on the road through Charminster to Cerne Abbas, just 5 miles away, world famous for the giant carved into the hillside, as well as for its excellent pubs. Pass the smallest pub in the British Isles at nearby Godmanstone on the way.
  • You can leave you car and use local buses and trains to explore the area. (Train/bus links)
  • The Charminster area has many footpaths through beautiful countryside, there is even a two mile walk round the village along footpaths past attractive village homes.
  • Bring your bike or hire one in Dorchester and you can explore the area on cycle tracks and country roads.
  • Dorchester is five minutes drive away, ten minutes on the cycle way or half an hour on the footpaths. The market on Wednesday morning is well worth a visit.
